Why just tell a story when you can make a statement?

I lead a charmed life… not because everything goes right, but because I am continually charmed by how life unfolds around me… Like this relatively recent shift in my career, from interior designer to oil painter of fabulously enormous hummingbirds. I paint other things, too, just like I still work on select interior design projects, but capturing these impossibly tiny beings and honoring their larger-than-life energy is the primary focus of my work.

An avid perennial gardener with residences in both Indiana and North Carolina, I have cultivated a creative practice that draws on the beauty of nature and draws in the hummingbirds I love to paint. Many of the photos I paint from the were taken in my own back yard, with the hummingbirds, sometimes, joining me in my studio! Primarily self taught, my interior design experience informs every aspect of my painting process. Well versed in color, pattern, planning and composition, I am confident in both expression and experimentation, willing to push the boundaries of my own knowledge, as well push some furniture around!

As a designer, I was known for a hands-on and hearts-in approach for my clients that adeptly told their life’s story. Now, it’s my turn… painting has become both the process and plot of my story with hummingbirds exuding “main character energy”. My hope is that you, too, will be charmed by the audacity of these paintings and that they will serve as a reminder… no, a statement … on the importance of taking a moment to drink in the beauty around you. Because, even a littlest bit could become something big.
